In the early part of Ephesians, Paul tells us that we reside in the spiritual realm now that we are “in Christ.” But Satan also operates in the spiritual realm. The Christian life is not just, “Jesus and me on the Jericho road,” but me and Jesus in the area where Satan also does his work. Thankfully, as Paul explains, we have protection from the work of Satan when we put on the “whole armor of God.”

Most of the “armor of God” is concerned with defense, but the soldier of Christ is also called to take the offensive weapon, “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). The Lord Himself perfectly demonstrated the weapon’s use during His wilderness encounter with the devil. When Satan tempted Jesus through partial representation of the truth, the Lord knew the Word perfectly and could not only recognize the perversion of it but counter it with the truth. There is a great need for believers who have developed skills in the Word of God and can use the Bible both as a weapon against error and a means of communicating truth. The sooner we bury the Word in our hearts, the better.

The most important thing is to study the word of God and to dwell in it.
